The German M35 helmet (Model 1935 Stahlhelm) was the standard combat helmet of the Wehrmacht at the start of World War II. The design was a modernization of the helmets of the First World War, with a lighter, more compact shape and an improved liner for greater comfort and protection. The M35 distinguishes itself from later models through its high-quality workmanship and specific construction. The underside of the helmet's shell is folded (rolled) inward to create a smooth, rigid brim. Unlike later models, the vents on the M35 are individual hollow rivets pressed into the shell. The shell was made of molybdenum steel plates, which provided an optimal balance between weight and strength. Decals (emblems): Early examples often had two decals: the national tricolor (red, white, and black) on the right and the emblem of the military unit on the left (such as the eagle for the Heer or Luftwaffe). Evolution and Modifications. Although the M35 was used until the end of the war, production was adjusted in 1940 to save costs.
This item:
Very beautiful Luftwaffe M35 helmet with both decals. This helmet was taken to the United States by a veteran and has returned after being away for 80 years. The helmet was manufactured by "EF", which stands for the producer Emaillierwerke A.G., Fulda. The helmet size is 64 with a size 57 liner. The helmet still features its original factory paint and decals. I will not assign a percentage to the completeness of the decals; I leave that to you. One of the legs of the swastika is slightly tilted; this occurred during the application of the decal at the time. The helmet has a high batch number: 20212, which also corresponds to the maker EF, the only manufacturer that continued numbering consecutively. The helmet is equipped with a reinforced aluminum liner. The leatherwork has seen better days, but in my opinion, it is the liner with which the helmet was delivered. The helmet was produced in mid-1939, and this is also the date clearly marked on the original chin strap. The chin strap is complete, flexible, and shows no tears. A wonderfully nice and honest helmet in beautiful condition.
