An absolute holy grail and a museum-grade centerpiece for the most advanced combat helmet collection; a 100% original, heavily combat-worn World War II German M35 Luftwaffe Double Decal camouflage combat helmet (Stahlhelm M35). This early-production SE64 piece showcases a spectacular, field-applied three-tone green, tan, and red-brown camouflage overpaint scheme with incredible battlefield character and an untouched wartime patina.The historical significance of this piece is paramount. The original leather chinstrap is deeply and crisply stamped with the elite unit marking: "Nachr. Abt. West 1939". The I. Abteilung Nachrichten-Abteilung West was responsible for the vital signal, radio, and telephone communications at the Western Front. Operating directly in the line of fire during the Blitzkrieg of 1940 and subsequent fierce defensive campaigns across France, these Luftwaffe signal troops maintained communications under constant enemy bombardment.To adapt to the dense French terrain, the soldier field-camouflaged his early blue-grey M35 helmet. In a fascinating display of wartime pride, the decals were not uncovered by post-war scratching; instead, the soldier carefully wiped away the fresh, wet camouflage paint right after application, keeping both the early Luftwaffe eagle and the national tricolor shield proudly visible underneath, or it appears that both the early Luftwaffe eagle and the national tricolor shield have been carefully and professionaly dug out further/scratched post-war by a previous collector to fully reveal the stunning decals underneath. This post-war exposure beautifully accentuates the rich, textured layering of the wartime camouflage paint contrast.The helmet shows true, honest frontline service wear. The top of the shell exhibits natural paint wear from combat activity, and a genuine period battle dent is present on the crown. The interior features its original M31 reinforced aluminum band leather liner and the matching 1939-dated Franz Brehme Walsrode chinstrap ("...SRODE 1939").Importantly, the three liner retaining rivets still cleanly retain original traces of the field-applied camouflage paint, proving they have never been removed. Due to natural aging, leather shrinkage, and metal tolerances over 85 years, the liner layout is currently not tightly fixed against the shell. In order to preserve this pristine historical time capsule, we have strictly left it as found—we do not tamper with our items, nor will we pull the liner apart with our fingers.
