WWII German Generals Bergmütze Mountain Cap - Rare Southern Front / Tropical Issue
An absolute centerpiece for the advanced collector: an exceptionally scarce, authentic German WWII general officer’s mountain cap (Bergmütze). This textbook item is a masterclass in elite Austrian tailor production (Wiener Schneideranfertigung), constructed from a high-grade, lightweight olive-green/brownish cotton-wool twill. This specific material and color palette were exclusively utilized for general officers deployed to warmer climates, such as the Southern Front (Italy, the Balkans) or Mediterranean theater.
A major diagnostic highlight of this early-to-mid war custom construction is the ventilation setup: each side features two flawless, factory-punched metal grommets/ventilation eyelets to alleviate heat during field operations.
The crown seam is beautifully piped with officer-grade golden bullion wire, denoting general rank. The insignia features a premium, early-pattern silver metallic woven national eagle (silberne vogel) hand-applied onto a dark green back-cloth—a historically accurate practice where early or field-grade silver insignia remained preferred by general officers on active mountain gear. This is paired with a separate national cockade wrapped in a distinct, finely woven golden wire wreath and secured at the front by two small, gold-gilded textured pebbled buttons. The left side holds a highly detailed metal Edelweiss badge with a gilded center, hand-stitched onto a dark field-gray felt backing.
The interior is lined in pristine brown satin cloth, completely protecting the undamaged celluloid diamond sheet (Cellonruit). The supple leather sweatband features a crisp, deeply embossed manufacturer's patent mark reading "Stirn-Schweißschutz" / D.R.G.M. alongside a clear "Wien" origin stamping. Roughly a size 56, this cap remains in sublime, virtually unissued and unworn condition. An unrepeatable, investment-grade example of a genuine Third Reich general officer’s field headgear.
